Kelly Bornstein is a Maine-certified driving instructor, York County local, and the founder of Kelly's Golden Key Driving Academy. Kelly built this school from a deeply personal motivation: a belief that the quality of driver education you receive shapes how you drive for the rest of your life — and that every young driver in York County deserves instruction that truly prepares them for the road.
With professional certification through the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles and specialized training in AAA's nationally recognized blended curriculum, Kelly brings expertise, patience, and a genuine passion for safety to every session. She knows York County's roads — Routes 1 and 91, the coastal stretches, the Turnpike, downtown York, the school zones — and she trains students on those very roads.

Maine law requires students to be at least 15 to enroll in a BMV-approved driver education course and apply for a learner's permit upon completion.
Students need a device with a working camera, microphone, and stable internet connection for Zoom classroom sessions. A tablet, laptop, or desktop works well.

Maine BMV requires completion of all 30 classroom hours before we can issue a driver education completion certificate. Please plan your schedule accordingly.

Kelly's Golden Key Driving Academy operates as a licensed driver education school under Maine Title 29-A, Section 1354, as administered by the Maine Secretary of State Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). We hold a Class 1 Driver Education School License authorizing us to provide both the classroom and behind-the-wheel phases of driver education.
All instructors employed by Kelly's Golden Key Driving Academy hold valid Maine driver education instructor licenses as required by state law. Teaching driver education without a valid license is a Class E crime under Maine law.
In compliance with Maine Title 29-A, Section 1354, Kelly's Golden Key Driving Academy maintains the required insurance coverage for a licensed driver education school, including:
All training vehicles are maintained in safe mechanical condition at all times and are equipped with dual-control foot brakes as required by Maine law.
Maine BMV requires that students complete all 30 hours of classroom instruction and all 10 hours of behind-the-wheel training before a driver education completion certificate can be issued. No certificate will be issued for partial completion.
Upon satisfactory completion of the course, Kelly's Golden Key will issue a temporary learner's permit certificate good for 60 days. During that time, the student must go to a Maine BMV branch office to obtain the official learner's permit. The BMV charges a $35 permit fee (subject to change — confirm at maine.gov/sos/bmv).
The $150 enrollment deposit is applied toward your total tuition and is non-refundable if the student withdraws. It reserves the student's seat in a specific session. The remaining remaining balance is due before the first class. If Kelly's Golden Key cancels a session, the deposit will be refunded in full or applied to a future session at the family's preference.
Students who withdraw after a session has begun are not entitled to a refund of fees paid for classroom sessions already delivered. Behind-the-wheel fees paid for sessions not yet conducted may be refunded at the school's discretion. Contact us at (207) 475-4861 to discuss your situation.
Maine BMV requires full attendance of all 30 classroom hours. Students who miss sessions must make them up in a future cohort. We allow one make-up opportunity per enrollment. Repeated absences may result in forfeiture of enrollment without refund of fees paid for sessions already delivered.
